Vogue Designer Issey Miyake 2522
Issey Miyake is my all time favorite Vogue designer and this is my all time favorite shirt. It is comfy but still has some style. This is my fourth time I have made this since the pattern came out in 1990. I am SO glad I never got rid of this pattern.I know I will make more of this design.
The shirt is made of a dark striped seersucker, pima cotton shirting for the piping, and a “M’liss” quilting cotton floral for the accents, all 100% cotton. I chose to topstitch the pleats and plackets with a tiny zigzag which adds to the casual vibe. The neckline, cuffs, and shoulders are piped with a bias shirting stripe. I got brave and put my label on the outside back collar. The colors of the label were just a perfect match and I don’t think it was too ostentatious.
The sleeves in this pattern are short, IMO. I am quite petite and I added an inch and a half to the sleeve length. A lot of attention needs to be focused on the sleeve construction. While the pattern appears to be be a poor draft, it is brilliant. The sleeve is cut in a way that makes it have a true bias meeting strait of grain at the placket/underarm seam. It fits together perfectly as the bias has been taken into account in the draft. I needed to interface the placket to deal with the bias.
I love this pattern and will definitely make it again. It gives me a real go to comfy shirt that I love to wear.
