I had always been curious about this cat symbol in the Asian community so I set out to make one from a 5″ ceramic statuette I bought at a store in Chinatown. The armature is chicken wire with draped fleece and gold netting. The fleece panels were draped then sewn together. The gold netting was tacked by hand as it didn’t stretch nicely over the curves of the piece. I managed this in three days and it was a pretty big hit last year. The head comes off and fits into the hollow body- convenient as I had to ride the bus to a Halloween party with it!!! My girlfriend is wearing the costume and as you can see she can move her arm up and down, which is the beckoning motion to bring luck. The characters on the gold coin loosely translates to say ‘one million dollars’.
