Princess Cimorene from “Dealing with Dragons”

Princess Cimorene gown

This is a gown I made for one of my friend’s daughters, who also happens to be one of my favorite library patrons! (I am a Children’s Librarian.) I gave her a copy of “Dealing with Dragons” by Patricia Wrede, and she fell in love with Princess Cimorene, who is a tough princess who would much rather learn science and swordplay than do “princess-y things,” so she goes out and finds a dragon and demands to be kidnapped. It’s hilarious and fun (Cimorene has to fend off all the princes who try to come and rescue her). My dear girl here just HAD to be Cimorene for Halloween! I drafted the gown to her measurements, and based the bell sleeves on photos of Arwen’s blue and red gown in the first Lord of the Rings movie. The edges of the neckline, sleeves, and hem are completely embroidered with leaves in white, which makes it look really elegant. The fabric was crushed panne velvet (which was on sale, hooray). The belt is covered with gold and jewels hand-beading. She made the sword herself! Here she is holding up what she calls “the best book ever!” Makes my heart happy.
