SewStylish Spring Fashion Challenge 2014

Red Carpet Dress

This dress was the final for my Bridal/Couture class. The bodice was done by hand basting gold beaded and embroidered tulle over burgundy poly satin. The skirt is a full ballgown in the same poly satin, and the dress is fully lined. Over 50 yards of tulle were used to shape the skirt. I used the bodice of Vogue 1084 for the bodice, with some modifications, and Vogue 2979 for the skirt. This was my first time making a ball gown, and I’m so happy with how it turned out. Also, a big thank you to my classmate, Julia, for modeling.

I just want to ask as a new sewer and not as criticism in any way...
See the almost gathered look of the seams in the skirt in the photo third from the top? Is this a result of the type of material, a home sewing mistake that can be fixed, or something else?
Again, I couldn't imagine making this dress, I ask only for my own learning.
I'd love it if someone took the time to answer as these sorts of questions I come up with in my own sewing but have noone to ask.
    Sam
