I decided to recreate one of the many costumes from the 1960s film Barbarella. Given my limited resources I added the extra challenge of making it out of materials that I had access to within that week. Therefore, a majority of the costume is made out of materials found at a dollar store. The ‘chainmail’ accents on the cape, the top and skirt, are created by spray painting rubber placemats with silver paint, then sewing them together.Rubber placemats sew together excellently and make a great cheap chainmail. I created the pattern for the top by using a pattern I had drafted for a halter top. I created the white top and red skirt sections from pieces of lycra that was being thrown out at my work. The black cape fabric was also from the throw away pile at my work. My raygun is a dollarstore water pistol painted with dollarstore silver paint. The decoder armband is made out of scrap silver vinyl I owned, and assorted metal jewelry bits from the dollarstore. For the boots, I took a pair of black leather boots, spray painted them silver, and added a strip of red velvet trim, which I got from cutting apart a large Christmas bow. Since I was unable to find white women’s tights, I luckily fit into a pair of large children’s tights. Using only a thrift store, dollar store and Walmart, I was able to create a fun replica costume for under $17.
