I decided to make Cersei Lannister’s red dress as a cosplay costume, and started with Simplicity 1487. The main part of the dress is made of medium weight, closely woven red linen. The side panels and sleeve trim are made of an oatmeal colored, loosely woven, rough looking lightweight linen, flatlined with a tightly woven linen/polyester blend. The sleeves are lined with a golden linen/cotton blend. Instead of using the embellishments suggested by the pattern, I used machine embroidery designs from Urban Threads to approximate the look of the original garment. The gold designs on the sleeves and the lions on the side panels were embroidered before assembly. The gold designs on the bodice were embroidered in Madeira gold metallic thread on silk organza and tear away stabilizer. After removing the stabilizer, I carefully cut away the organza not covered by thread, then pinned and sewed the designs to the bodice. This gave the designs loft they would not have had otherwise, and it gave me flexibility in blending the designs into the curves of the garment. The bodice is fully lined for comfort(my addition) and the dress has a side zipper. I completed the dress on 10/30/2014.
