Black Beard - Pirates of the Carribbean On Stranger Tides
My husband wanted a movie accurate costume of Black Beard’s garb from ‘Pirates of the Carribbean On Stranger Tides’. Since I didn’t have the means or machinery to make it out of leather, we compromised with wool. The entire jacket and the back side of the vest are made out of black wool with black fashion jaquard lining. The vest front is made from pleather. The belt was hand dyed and fixed with metal attachements and brads. The shirt is made of black cotton with hand ratted lace at the cuffs and the pants are a stretch cotton for comfortability. The hat and shoes were the only premade and purchased items.
The real devil in this costume is the details. Every single line of trim and button is hand sewn. The trim extends onto the jacket front, shoulders, arms, and cuffs. The “pauldrons” on the shoulders were hand drafted as they weren’t part of the original pattern design, but were part of the character design. The buttons were as movie accurate as we could find them and are all made of pewter. All together, it was about 100 hours of work for the jacket alone, with the trim taking a majority of that time.
