Fancy Fabrics Challenge 2014

Fancy Fabrics Challenge 2014 Contest

The base fabric is a tuquoise satin. The overlay is a dark blue. Together they create this exquisite color.

Originally, this was supposed to be a simple McCall’s pattern, M6893. I chose the overlay because it had scalloping on the edges, and the embroidery was visually interesting. When it came time to do the bodice overlay, I couldn’t get the edging of the overlay out of my head. I chose to do the other edge for the bodice, giving it a two-tiered look. The satin needed to be serged while working with it, as it tended to fray badly. The skirt and skirt overlay were separately pleated and then pieced together. I chose to hand stitch the arms and neck for an invisible seam. Since I am a novice at sewing, I had my aunt helping with her serger and expertice to complete this dress.
