Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent Dragon

Their debut at a pumpkin patch.(I took the pic)

I mean really, who wants to be a prince when you can be a dragon. My daughter wanted to be Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) but I knew my son wasn’t going to want to be prince Philip so I decided on the super cool dragon that Maleficent becomes. I’ve gone into great detail in the individual costume entries so here is a quick overview of my creation of these two costumes.I made Aurora first using Simplicity 1303 but then re-drafted the sleeve to make them come to a point and around the middle finger and bound with fold over elastic. I draped a new belt piece to match the pointed design on Aurora’s dress in the movie, created a collar that can be easily removed for times when she just wants to be fancy, and created a crown using stiff interfacing, paper, spray glue and a plastic crown. The dress is made with alternating sparkle pink and plain pink tulle and there’s more tulle on the inside to give it body. The bodysuit of the dragon was made using Simplicity 2788 but I greatly increased the size of that pattern from many years of use. I added panels of scales throughout the costume and drafted a curving tail with spines that is sewn to the back of the bodysuit. The wings are removable and were also drafted by me. They include a wire hanger to keep their shape. Lastly I created the head by starting with a baseball hat then covering that in a black fleece hood that I sewed the “gill” portion and horns to it. I extended the the bill of the hat with stiff felt and set in nostrils. The horns are made using paper rings individually stacked on top of one another decreasing in size going up then covered in electrical tape. These themed costumes were a blast to make and I am so happy with how they turned out. I can’t wait for next Halloween!
