I love tomatoes! With sugar or salt, they are a favorite! I needed to create a costume that would cover the nose and mouth for my daughter with items found around the house. I looked around for something that would create shape in the garage and found the tomato cage from the garden. Striking gold…or red, my mind quickly tried to piece together what would work to make a child look like a tomato plant. I found a large lime green T-shirt and paired it with white leggings for the main outfit and to create a complimentary background to make the tomatoes stand out. I found red knit jersey and self-made circle patterns that my daughter and I cut out. We stuffed them with poly-fill and tied them shut with green ribbon to simulate the stem and attached them to the tomato cage. I created another pattern to make the hood which covers the head, nose and mouth, slides underneath the T-shirt at the neck and is tied cutely on top of the head with a bow. Together we made a garden sign which we attached to the tomato cage and finished off the costume with two round tomato circles on her cheeks. For us, the best part was making something totally original. This was done with items from around the house and ideas from our heads (no help from books or looking online) and our own hands. Her smile says it all!
