Designing a Sewing room

Ruthanne_Giordano | Posted in The Archives on

We’re finishing off our basement, starting Saturday. I’m getting a sewing room out of the deal, and I need to start figuring out exactly what I want. I’d like something that is so organized that just looking at it inspires you to sew. Can anyone recommend any books, websites, or ideas in general that will help to make an awesome sewing room? I have a few ideas, but I’d appreciate input from others. Thanks much!

*I do have my drean sewing room. Everything in my sewing room is built in using a white kitchen cupbaords and blue spruce counter tops, and I have a wallpaper border with a sewing theme. Here are some things that I like and think are important;-Walk around cutting table at a good stand-up height, mine is 36.5".-Sewing counters at a good sit-down height with enough space for all of your sewing machines, mine are 27" high. -Get the cords out of your way. I have cut holes in the counter top behind each sewing machine for the electric cords to pass thru. They plug in under the counter with a special line that has an on/off switch by the door.-Instead of a regular fold-up type ironing board consider a large flat ironing table made from covered plywood. I only use my standard ironing board when pressing finished garments. I have one that folds up inside the wall.-Plan on using all light colors and having plenty of lights. I have 12 48" floresent lights in the ceiling of my 14X20 sewing room.-If you need a desk area, computer area, family area, or childrens play area please plan for that.-I have slide-by mirrored doors on my closet, very, very nice.-Storage area = a must, 'nuf said.My sewing room was planned only for sewing, but my family of seven finds that this room is the most inviting room in the house. They all use it for all kinds of projects, school work, crafts, etc. I don't know how other families get along without a 'sewing room'. Yes, all my good supplies are in the sewing room, but I also have a family drawer where they can find scissors OK to use and all the other goodies [pencils, batteries, tape, glue, stuff, and junk.]Happy sewing to you. Yes my sewing room inspires me to sew, everything is out and in it's place and ready to sew. Everyone in my family knows how to sew and they will not hesitate to sit down and do it them selves for a little job. This includes my husband and three sons.

*The one thing I would add to the comments and suggestions above is a great office chair. Something with great lower back support. I find that the chair is the most important part of my sewing room, next to my sewing machine of course.Janine
