Pattern Review: Atelier 8 Avril Lapiz Blouse or Dress
A Stylish Popover Shirt
Skill Level:
This design is moderately challenging. The instructions are in French, but non-French-speaking sewers with know-how could interpret the illustrations. There is a tutorial, also in French, on YouTube.
Size Range and Fitting:
The pattern is available in French sizes 34 to 48 for busts 31 inches to 43-3 ⁄ 4 inches and waists 23-1 ⁄ 4 inches to 35-3 ⁄ 4 inches. The ease at the bust is 9-1 ⁄ 2 inches, at the waist 15-3 ⁄ 4 inches, and at the hips almost 6 inches. The ease is suitable for this garment type, but you may prefer to increase the hip circumference.
Fabrics:
This style works in wovens in a variety of weights. Recommended fabrics include denim, jacquard, tweed, gabardine, linen, chambray, cotton, and eyelet. Our tester added corduroy and velvet. Versions in midweight textiles work for daytime activities; dressy fabrics such as lace and jacquard produce special-occasion looks.
Style and Sewing Details:
This popover shirt and tunic-length dress design has a spread collar, front yokes with angled seams, a neckline tab closure, a back yoke, and three-quarter sleeves. The center-back lengths are 27-1 ⁄ 4 inches and 36-1 ⁄ 4 inches, respectively. On each view, the back hemline is 1-1 ⁄ 4 inches longer than the front hemline, and the side seams end in 1-1 ⁄ 4-inch vents. The cuffs are 2 inches wide and have a 14-inch circumference. The dress has two front patch pockets, with flaps, set low on the hips.
