I am Sheridan, and new to the list . I have a threads question.
I am a threads subscriber but I can’t find the issue that has the article on embellishing with paint sticks. The video on the web site caught my interest. Is there a way I can read the whole article on line. I have product and care questions. I have not found anything called paint sticks. I did find a oil paint stick that is crayon shaped and has a skin so I think that is the product. They were with the oil pastels. Also do I have to give the material any special care? Do I set the oil in a special manner? What does it do to the texture of the material? When I have gotten oils on my painting smock it has become stiff. Is the a way to prevent stiffness?

The article you are looking for is in the current issue, the one with the dressforms on the cover. If you are a subscriber, you should have this issue. The article will answer most of your questions, but it is only in the magazine, not online.
The oil paint sticks you found are the ones you are looking for to use in this technique, if I recall correctly. Don't use oil pastels as they are a different product in composition.
Hope this helps.
I've done a lot of experimenting with the shiva oil sticks. The Shiva oilsticks do not change the hand of the material and I've used them on everything from cotton to silk. You have to let the material cure for a few days after painting it and it will smell a bit from the oils and then it must be heat set. Here are a couple of sites with more info on working with them.

Not done with paint sticks, but really fab is a dress on Crafster.org. A young woman painted watered down acrylics and then washed it off with the hose. Fabulous watered effect on chiffon. she then made an elegant dress from the fabric.
