Metallic thread in hem

This message is also on Equipment board. I am making a square dance outfit with narrow “skirt tail” type hems on the skirt bottom ruffle and sleeve ruffles. The resulting hem resembles those found on men’s dress skirts. These areas will get little to moderate stress. Since the fabric I am using is trimmed in gold, I would like to use the Sulky Gold Metallic. I have a Viking 1+ and will be using the 1/4 ” narrow hem foot. Since these types of narrow rolled hems are made with the wrong side of the fabric up, can I use the Sulky in the bobbin if I sew carefully and slowly? Also, is metallic thread strong enough for a hem especially if a standard ploy/cotton thread will be used in the needle? The outfit will be laundered in cool water with standard detergent, dried in a dryer and pressed with a warm iron.

I use metallic thread a lot in my work. Like may other things in sewing, sometimes the sewing gods smile down on you and sometimes they don't.

I have used Sulky, Coats & Clark and YLI metallic threads. I sometimes but not always use a metallic needle. I use the metallic threads both in the bobbin as well as through the needle. Sometimes using drops of silicon on the bobbin will prevent breakage. Most times I don't anymore. Things tend to go better if you use the same thread in both needle and bobbin. Go slowly. Sometimes I don't attach the thread at that last cathch before threading it. That prevents some fraying.

I have been doing this for years using the same machine and the same threads. What works one time may not work the next. When your thread keeps breaking, take a big breath, clean & oil your machine, change your needle and try it again changing one of the variables. Some days it just wont won't work. Then go onto something else.

    Best of luck!!!
