I am starting to sew again in my middle 50’s – haven’t sewn since high school. Have a new, very simple machine and want to make gathered skirts for my granddaughter. I’m think all I really need to do is add 1/2″ to her waist size after triplingit for gathering, and about 2 inches to the length for hem, plus adding 1″ for the elastic casing.
As you can see, it’s been a very long time since I’ve done this. Any special hints or tips?

The biggest thing to figure out is, how old is your granddaughter? The kind of simple gathered skirt you would make would really depend on that. For a little girl who is between the ages of 3 and about six, the most important thing about a skirt is the twirl factor. For a little girl of that age, I would make the skirt at least 2 1/2 x the size of her waist. I would also make it in a shiny, flashy or very lacy fabric. The little girl' mother may not love you for it but the girl will love you forever.
For an older girl I would go more restrained. I would have her go pattern & fabric shopping with me. It is just too frustrating to put work into something & not have the recipient enjoy it. Yes, you can steer her towards the easy to sew patterns. I speak from experience. I have made some lovely lovely things for my daughter that she refused to wear if she was not in on the planning and designing... Most of them were worn with great joy by her friends.
