Niece’s Prom Dress

Taffeta Prom Dress

My niece requested a prom dress in her favorite color, orange. Her design choices came from Butterick 5136 as the bodice, and Burda 5367 as the skirt. The wrap design was from McCall’s 3880. The dress was made from polyester taffeta and underlined in polyester organza. The underlining was to strengthen and add body to the taffeta. The bodice was lined with self fabric and the skirt was finished with Hong Kong seams. The skirt ruffles were skewed to help them stand out. The wrap pattern called for pulling one end through a simple slit and I found that this would not ensure it staying in place. So I placed a hand-sewn flower halfway over the slit to provide some friction. The wrap looks lovely whether worn on the shoulders or at the waist. My niece was delighted with the results!
