Built in bra for low cut dresses

jacigh | Posted in The Archives on

I remember a threads article about making a bra to go in a low cut dress but I cannot remember what issue it was in. Can any one tell me?

Are you trying to fit a bra to a dress, or keep an existing bra in a strapless dress? What seems to be the exact problem. I cannot find the article you remember either. Cathy
I went through the archives, try issue #51

I am trying to put a bra into a low cut dress. The article was a great one. I hope I can eventually find it. I remember the dress it went into was blue! Crazy, huh?

      Thanks for replying.

Based on your criteria of the blue dress, this likely is not the article you remember, but in the Question section of Issue 109 there is an article about creating a shelf bra in camisole tops and other low-cut garments. Also in this same issue there is an article on bustiers, with the sub title "How to bare shoulders and plunge necklines without revealing it all".

Thanks for the reply but I could swear that it was much more recent an issue than 2003.

My interest in bra making has just been in the last 2 years.

I thought it was sometime in the last year that I saw the article. In my minds eye, I can see the wrapped elastic and preformed cups...

It's driving me crazy!  It was such a great article that I shared it with a class and that may be the problem locating my issue... it may have grown legs...

For that reason, I try to keep my Threads magazines close at hand.... Anyhow, one more attempt. Issue 131, which I also cannot lay my hands on, has an article called "Take the Plunge". Its sub-title is: Learn how to make an ultrasupportive swimsuit that fits your body, and the cover of the magazine shows a blue swim suit. You can see the cover by going to the Taunton home page, then click on "Buy Back Issues". From there you can click on issue 131 and that will take you to a picture of the cover and the index of that magazine. As a matter of fact, when you get to the Back Issues page, you can review the main content of all of the back issues. That might be of benefit to you.Goo luck. I know how frustrating it is to know what you are looking for and being unable to locate it.

I think the article you are looking for is in Threads 124 pg 44 called Building a Better Bust.

It shows how to use bust cups and elastics to create support for halter neck and backless dresses.

            Hope this helps.

            Thank you, Natalie!

That IS the article I was looking for.

SewStylish, Red Carpet Ready issue, has a really good article on building a better bust. There are some really good tips in there to go along with the other articles. The whole issue is well worth it for several articles on corsets, boning, bra cups, strapless dress support. Used it to make my daughter's prom dress. Can be seen under the photos, Pretty in Pink. Perhaps instead of building a bra as such, you need to build a corset type inner structure for support. It can be added to the inside of a ready made dress. This issue has some great ideas on making regular bra stay put inside a dress also. Cathy

You guys are so great to share all this good information, thank you!

Does the Red Carpet Ready issue of SewStylish have a issue number or date to reference?

I will try and find a copy.

Number 1, Spring/Summer 2007. I just ordered the back issues that I missed from Taunton online. I haven't checked to see if it is still available. CathyYup, it still is available through the Taunton store. CL
