In the March 18th New York Times, there was a picture of rose-patterned burn-out velvet curtain panels (42×96, $350). I have very narrow, long windows in a Victorian house and thought they might be simple, but elegant & provide some privacy but allow light in. Are there discount places to purchase burn-out? What kind of hems? Any other problems I should consider? Thanks for your ideas.

I have not seen burn-out velvet in the discount stores but I'm only familiar with California stores. Thai Silks has a great mail order service and a good selection of burn-outs and there are always a few on sale (the white ones you can dye if you are into that). I think it would be more reasonable than the $350. You can reach TS at 1-800-722-SILK or [email protected]. I would you would want to put some decent size hems in. Read the Linda Lee article in past Thread for sewing on velvet. I think they would look great!
