fabric shopping in Toronto

NYFox | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

Can anyone suggest some good fabric stores in Toronto? I’ll be visiting in a couple of weeks. Thanks!

I don't get downtown Toronto as much as I would like any more, but I always visit Tessuti Venezia.  Very Italian, very upscale.  It's at 1305 StClair W.  If you get a chance, try to check out some of the ethnic markets, most hotels can help you with tours and directions.  Many of these buisiness come and go, but there's always one or two merchants selling fabrics, notions, or other fascinating things.  I went into a store where nobody spoke english, only punjabi, but we all managed to understand each other when it came to the laguage of fabric.   If you get a chance to leave the Toronto area, in the St Jacobs, Waterloo County area there are many stores that specialize in quilting and quilting fabrics.  There is a large mennonite population, and some of these ladies are world class quilters.

I also haven't been to downtown Toronto recently, but there is a garment district not too far from downtown. There are a lot of fabric stores on Queen street west of Spadina. If you go to the intersection of Queen and Spadina, and walk west on Queen Street, you will find many fabric and notion shops on both sides of Queen street.

I haven't been to Toronto for awhile, I would start in the garment district on Queen St. W and Spadina, there are some great stores around there.  Also, much further west on Queen St. is the Designer Fabric Outlet at 1360 Queen St. W. which is a must see. They are also online at http://www.designerfabricoutlet.ca.
