Need help putting elastic in bathing …
*
I am making a bathing suit for my sister and for the bikini bottom she chose a heavy lycra, probably more suitable for bike shorts than a bathing suit. But it is nice fabric and I thought we could make it work. I am putting in the leg elastic and did all the markings, gave the elastic three or four great big stretches, like the article in Threads said to so it wouldn’t grow, and when I sewed it in, it didn’t pull back. Is the lycra too heavy for bathing suit elastic or what is my problem? What can I do? Is there other elastic that would be suitable for swimwear and heavy enough for the lycra? Help!!

did you use the heavy chlorine reisistant elastic or the clear one - I have had more success with the chlorine resistant one and have more of the elastic stretched over the butt area of the suit so it looks slightly gathered there and when it is one it hugs nice and tight. I just serge the elastic on the then turn it under and zig zag - this seems to work better with less threat breakage than the top stitching.
*I have made tons of dancewear and bathing suits and swear by elastic made by Stretch and Sew. It's really stretchy and doesn't seem to dig in, even when you apply it fairly tightly. I serge it on and then turn it and zig zag it. I've had similar problems of the elastic not working when I've used other brands.
