Pant leg gather or creases

angelica | Posted in General Sewing Info on

Hello,

My son asked me hem his trousers which I can fine, but along the leg crease down below the knee the pants are gathering.  They do not lay straight and he ask what I could do about that.  Can anyone help me?

    Angelica,

The creases are there because you have removed the wider part of the orginial hem.

Most patterns have a fold at the mid knee to change the hem and a flare at the hemline.  You need to either add fabric by using some of the seam allowance or allow the new hem to have a bit of an interior gap at each seamline.  Children (our own) are the hardest to please. :)

If I understand the problem corectly, when you re-hemmed the pants, the hem allowance didn't lay flat against the pant leg? so ther was sort of a gap at the front crease? another way of fixing this is to clip into the hem allowance at the center front and maybe 1/2 inch on either side of center front - make the clips about 1/4 inch, then, with steam and pressing, strech the hem allowance to spread it out and it will then fit nicely. you can sege over the clips if you need to.
