Today, myself and others at the two Rose and Hubble retail outlets here in the U.K. have been made redundant. The original company has foundered and the name and fabric remnants have been sold to whoever – the end of an era! Will Rose and Hubble ever mean the same?
Apart from losing employment our community has just lost a high quality fabric outlet and aren’t they becoming scarce? What is the answer to this decline?

Yes, it's very sad news, both for you who have lost your jobs and for those of us who look for interesting, good quality fabrics. I'm in the UK too and I despair sometimes. I only know of one good shop in the Oxford area, where I live, and that's a small one in Thame. I order from the web (Phoenix Textiles et al.) but for a wider choice of fabric I can actually touch, it has to be an excursion to London I suppose.
I wish I knew what the answer was. I think most people just don't have the skills and time to sew any more. A smaller market means higher prices and then it's more financially risky to try to sew something that, in the end, may not fit well because you don't understand how to make it fit. And the availability of reasonably-priced clothes in high street shops means that sewing to save money is not the primary motivation. My sister and I sew because we are both tall and cannot find much to fit us in ready-to-wear.
