Threads transforms sewing skills

smasusco | Posted in Feedback on Threads on

I just wanted to say to the editors that Threads has transformed me as sewer. I have been sewing since the age of 7, having learned from my mom and making my own clothes through elementary school, high school and college–simple stuff that I could make by following directions in the patterns, but which mostly looked home-made. But by the time I got to my mid 20’s. I stopped. I no longer liked what I wore. It was mostly because of fitting issues, and also frayed edges since all I used to usually do is pink.

I came across Threads 4 years ago at the library. Up until then I had no idea that it and the extended sewing community existed. I pored through that issue and was astounded at how much there was to learn about sewing. I became aware of the muslin fit testing technique. I learned skills and information about fabrics and notions that I had never even thought about before. I immediately subscribed and also ordered and started to read dozens of back issues. I feel like my sewing has improved 200%. I am proud that I can make anything now, copy anything, adjust anything and have it look so professional because because of the master’s degree-type of education that Threads gave me.

Whereas sewing was an occasional pastime before, now it is passion. Knowing these skills has unleashed a creativity in me I never knew I had. It’s my main hobby now. I am even thinking of making fashion a career for how much joy it brings me. Thank you to Threads for offering this wealth of knowledge.

Same here! I've always sewed. And always enjoyed it. Yet everything still had the look of "homemade". I came across Threads years ago and started subscribing right away. Even kept up the subscription through years of not sewing while in college and the busy early years in my career. It's been in the last couple years I've been able to make some time to sew and realized how much better I've become at it even with years of no practice. Just yesterday I was showing off one of my latest creations at the fabric store and had lines of people oogling my work and telling my it looked even better than store bought. So thank you Threads! And keep it up. I love reading about challanging techniques which inspire me to stretch my skills further and further.

It made me happy to read your comments.  It is always fun to see how much enjoyment one can have from crafting a special, well fitting, garment that others admire and compliment you on.

Like you, Threads has always been a favorite of mine because it seemed to expect more than just mediocre from me.  I always wanted to try a new way of doing a task that may have been demonstrated in one of the articles.  I especially liked seeing the finished garment looking so professionally made in the pictures and I wanted to be able to sew like that.  Like all things, practice makes perfect and although I know there are many areas I could use improvement in, I think I can honestly say I perfected the Art Of Sewing, as I told one woman who asked me what my area of creativity was as we sat next to each other at a luncheon for our "Creativity Group".  Most of the others in the club are into entering art shows with their paintings and jewlry making, etc. but I only do it all for my own enjoyment or for gifts.  It is interesting though, her eyes lit up when I said that about sewing and she began telling me about all the traumas she was having trying to take up sewing again and having a very dificult time doing it as well as she wanted.
