TIPS? BEGINNER WORKING WITH KNITS

Hello,
Not exactly new to sewing but new to sewing..again. When I was younger I made all of my dolls clothing and took lessons. Over 10 years later, I have decided to begin sewing again. I started with dog bandanas with a woven fabric, but I am interested in doing more
I woud like to make myself a skater style dress with a cotton/spandex knit fabric. I do have a pattern. I have never worked with knits before
What are the biggest tips you have for working with knits?

Hi! Congrats on coming back to sewing! Sewing with knits is so rewarding - you can make beautiful garments quickly, with minimal finishing and a forgiving fit.
Here are some tips that have helped me: 1. Use the correct needle to avoid skipped stitches. Make sure the needle size is the correct match for your fabric weight, and choose the best point for the knit type. Schmetz, for example, makes needles specifically for jersey knits. 2. Test your stitches first. Make samples to adjust your stitch tension and length and ensure that you won't have stretched-out seams or skipped stitches. 3. Sew stay tape into key seams for stability. SewKeysE stay tapes are very good and there is a wide variety. Best of luck! Enjoy your sewing and please share your projects - would love to see them! - Sarah M., Threads Editorial Director
