What could be a more special party ensemble than the one you wear to your Senior Prom!!!
This is the prom dress that I made for my daughter to wear to her senior prom. We combined a variety of patterns and looks to make this one of a kind dress.
The ruched bust area and the knotted, twisted, cap sleeve was inspired by a Donna Karen dress worn by Kate Blanchette to the Golden Globes Award Ceremony. The bust area of the bodice is ruched and interlocked in the center to create a twisted look. The ruching is hand tacked from behind, through the interlining to hold the folds in place over the bust line.
The midriff area between the bust and the hipline has ruched strips that are woven to create a diagonal, criss-cross effect. Matching beaded & sequined trim has been hand sewn to the seam, under the bustline. The entire bodice is fully lined with boning in the bust seams and side seams. The mid-riff and the skirt silhouette were looks inspired by a Vera Wang Dress that had been worn by Oprah at her 205 Legends Ball. To create the “bubble” at the hem, a gathered tulle ruffle is attached to the lining so it lays between the lining and the outer skirt.
I made a petticoat slip of white taffeta and bridal tulle, to give the skirt an a-line shape. The ensemble also included a shawl, made out of the same fabric as the dress.
I used Simplicity pattern 4577 for the bust area. The rest of the gown was made with my own pattern. We found the fabric- a silk dupioni- at a independent fabric store in the Fashion District in downtown Los Angeles.
How beautiful!! Lucky young lady!!
This is really amazing gown. For girls in particular, prom night has to be absolutely perfect, and no prom night can be absolutely perfect for a young teenager without an absolutely perfect prom dress.
