Red shimmery velvet jacket with “love letters” appliqued. Front closure is a litte silver enameled postcard button. Back left shoulder bears a stack of postcards tied with a red orgnaza ribbon. Gold foreign stamps are embossed into the velvet. Top edge of front overlapping side and opposite bottom feature a narrow band of ruffled tulle in red, black, and shimmery brown, which combine to make a color almost exactly that of the velvet. Top stitched with metallic twist red and pink thread. Faced with black cotton print of love letters.
I made this jacket for Valentine’s Day because I wanted to experiment with velvet. Everyone had written that velvet does not feed evenly through the sewing machine, which did not reflect my experience. So in making this I used my Bernin Aurora with the teflon-coated foot. It fed smoothly and evenly with no problems. I was also very pleased with the way the stamping embossed the velvet. I used a Clover mini-iron to fuse my interfaced postcard appliques down without touching the surrounding pile.
What a labour of love you have created! I especially like the style of the jacket with the added tulle edging. You have a great imagination. So often we go right past a notion, or a 'post card button' because we don't know what to do with it. Now we can see that a whole jacket could be inspired from a simple idea.
