This jacket was created from a man’s Shohi ikat robe from Uzbekistan, made in the early 1900s. The robe was purchased from the collection of Susan Meller, (Silk and Cotton, Textiles from the Central Asia that was). The lining is of Russian cotton and the facing is handwoven Ikat. The robe was hand quilted with a natural cotton batting. I actually found cotton seeds in the batting. I wanted to maintain as much of the original trim and facing as possible, so I cut the jacket from the bottom of the robe. The designs in the silk ikat weave represent ram’s horn and pomegranates motifs.
