Can anyone give me a good source for active wear fabric? I would like to make my own aerobics clothes. What exactly am I looking for? Is is jersey? I know it’s not swimsuit fabric. the Addidas ready to wear stuff I have is between 88% cotton + 12% spandex and 95% cotton + 5% spandex.

I have been sewing for dance costumes and look for knits and knits and knits. I look for anything to embellish. I usually start with http://www.denverfabrics.com I've gotten very lucky going through the advertisements in your sewing magazines - Threads, SewNews, etc. I know you aren't looking for swim suit fabric, but at a sewing site, you might just look under "stretch" and see how you do. If you use a general search engine, I've had better luck with the MSN search than the google search. Looking under "lycra fabric" has found me very lucky. Good Luck to you!
Thank you. I knew threads readers would come through.
Hello -- I found some sites that I think you ought to check out...
http://www.stretchhouse.com
http://www.spandexhouse.com
and
http://www.spandexworld.com
I haven't yet bought anything from these, but I will be. Good luck - keep us updated!
Cool! Thanks "sew" much! I use Denver Fabrics here but liked the store better before the remodle. I hate cutting my own fabric! Are other stores doing this anywhere? Mary
If you order online, I suggest that you send them an email first regarding the suggested fabric weight for your purpose and possible samples. I use cotton lycra. You don't want to end up with t-shirt fabric for workout wear. Mary
You can't beat Rockywoods Fabrics (http://www.rockywoods.com) for active wear knits. Audrey has all the high-tech, wickaway fabrics seen in expensive athtletic clothes (for example, biking and running gear). Every type of polar fleece--windblock, powerstretch, you name it. Excellent customer service; for example she'll contact you if there are problems with your order.
I make it a point to visit Spandex House when I'm in New York on business; they stock more in the way of fashion fabrics. (In other words, you're lucky if you can find supplex nylon, never mind some of the wickaway fabrics.)

Hi Dorothy,
I looked at the website you mentioned, which is awesome. I didn't see any patterns for mens running shorts. Do you know where I could get one?
Marcy
Glad you liked the site! She has fantastic stuff. As for running shorts patterns, I would try Jalie, http://www.jalie.com.
Good luck!

Christine Jonson has high quality cotton lycra suitable for active wear in a number of colors. Google her or look her up in the back of Threads, I don't remember her web address
