Has anyone ever done alterations on a sweater knit?? I had to take in the side seams of a skirt for a customer because she wanted the side seams narrower down to the hemline. I used wooley nylon in the bobbin, a yellow band needle and a short zig zag stitch.. After pressing, the seam looked great. However, once she put it on, the seam indented on both sides about 3/4 of the way down. I thought perhaps this type of fabric should not have been taken in until I saw a ready made sweater knit dress that was also narrower at the hem than at the hip line and it was perfectly straight. I then sewed seam tape on each seam hoping that would keep the seam from indenting, but it did not help, it actually looked worse. I doubt I will ever take another job involving sweater knits again. But, I am really hopeful someone out there has had a similar experience and can explain how they dealt with this problem.

I've never altered a sweater knit skirt, but I've altered several big, long cardigans to slim them down and been satisfied with the results. They seemed to hang just fine. I've always used my serger. Do you think that would make the kind of difference you describe?
I don't know why this happens, but I have experienced the same thing. I think perhaps it has something to do with the the stretch as it goes over the hips and it just doesn't hang straight below it. And I don't know a fix. A good pressing perhaps right on the seam?
