Buying a sewing machine for my daughter
I am looking to buy a sewing machine for my daughter. Have been recommended the Husky/Viking machine that has an auto buttonholer and easy threader. It costs about $350. Any advice?

Emma is one of the basic models, but I believe it's mechanical and I'm developing a prejudice against those because of the buttonhole functions. Your daughter should go with you to try out any machine but I think the Iris, a special edition machine, is excellent although it is much more than the one you're considering. Consider how much she will use it. Viking also makes several Freesia models that are very nice. I love to sew and therefore I tend to lean toward the more expensive models (I'm looking at getting a Pfaff 2024 in addition to my Viking Designer 1, so you know I'm a nutcase). Hope that is of some help. Let us know what you decide on.
We ended up with an Elna after all; the people at the store were so wonderful that it tipped the scales that direction. Thanks for your response, though, I really appreciate it.
well, that makes a huge difference. You can never underestimate good service and wonderful sales people. When I was upgrading from my old Singer (about 100 years ago) I was looking at an Elna, but I was a poor student and couldn't afford it. But the folks who had one just raved about how good they were and I developed a bad case of Elna envy. You certainly can't go wrong with it. Best wishes with your purchase and may it bring your daughter many happy hours of sewing fun.
