Hi Everyone,
I am new to the forum although I have been sewing for many years. I am planning to make McCalls dress 5179 and would like to change the sleeve from the set in shown in the pattern to a raglan sleeve. I would appreciate some advce on how this could be done or even a recommendation for a book outlining how to make this kind of change to a pattern. Thanks.

hi! i looked up the pattern; i would caution you to try your adaptation out in some cheap fabric (with similar drape) first, because it may greatly affect overall fit. since the design is a v-neck wrap-around, it's possible that the more fitted set-in sleeve helps anchor the bodice in place. a looser raglan sleeve might result in the wrapped front pieces shifting around the torso and gaping at the chest.
however, in case it works, it's fairly easy. lay out each front section flat on a large work surface, and lay out the sleeve pattern with it, overlapping the seam allowances and matching any center dots. use a straight-edge to align the sleeve true with the slope of the shoulder. lay tissue paper over this and trace the 2 pieces as one. you will need to soften the underarm angle by creating an arc up from side seam, starting a few inches below underarm seam, and gently rounding out to taper into the sleeve. i don't know that there is a formula or standard for the dimension of that arc. i'd say, whatever looks good in tha fabric
Thanks so much. I did think I'd try on another fabric 1st. Just couldn't picture how to make the sleeve part.
