combining polar fleece with other fabric

Allyson | Posted in General Discussion on

HI!  I am sewing a house coat for my 6 year old son.  I’m using a very basic Kwik Sew pattern with a collar facing and turn back cuffs.   My fabric is a medium weight polar fleece.  I would like to use a different fabric for the facing and cuffs to add some interest.   Do I need to use polar fleece or could I use flannel or terry (towel material) or cotton waffle knit?  Will the different weights/types of fabric cause a problem after washing?  Does anyone have any creative ideas for me?????  Thanks.

There shouldn't be a problem with the different fabrics that you suggested as long as you "preshrink, preshrink, and preshrink" those different types of material.  And as long as they can then be washed or cleaned the same after making the garment you should be fine.  I have used cotton material with polar fleece fairly effectively as cuffs and collars like you suggested.  Just remember if this is for a little guy don't use anything to scratchy or crisp or heavy as they may become uncomfortable.  Good luck.
