I am having trouble sewing corduroy both with my regular machine – a Pfaff and with my serger – a Singer. Have changed needles – smaller/ larger. Has something happened to corduroy? I’ve sewn it in the past with no problem. The machines both can hardly put the needle through the fabric. Last year I made pants for both my grandchildren and the fabric disintegrated along the seam line. This year sewing for a client, the serger just would not do its thing. I ended up overcasting with the Pfaff.

Is this a really heavy 100% cotton corduroy? Or is it made of something else? I use corduroy all the time and have no trouble with it in either my Kenmore 19001, my Janome Jem Silver, or with my Singer serger. Perhaps it is time for the knife to be changed or sharpened on your serger. Check the pressure of the presser foot if it is adjustable. Use a slightly longer stitch when sewing heavy fabrics and use a larger needle, probably a 16 or jeans needle in your machine for heavy corduroy. It may also be helpful to loosen the upper tension a little bit.
Sounds like the reason the pants fell apart at the seams is too tight and small a stitch that actually 'cut' the fabric. Which seam was it, the inseam? A flat-fell stitch is best there due to wear and tear on the upper inseam.
