A great link--just the way that I do it! This is one case where hand-sewing is ultimately easier than machine sewing.
I'd recommend a lighter weight fabric to cover a snap, though, so that it will close securely and not be as bulky. Maybe the thicker fabric shows up better in the tutorial photographs, but I like to use very thin silk that coordinates with or matches the fashion fabric.
I agree that silk or a lightweight fabric would be the best covering. Funny I didn't even notice which fabrics were being used, just focused on the technique. It does seem that a thicker fabric would interfere with a firm and secure closure.
