Did I purchased the right machine?

Patti | Posted in Equipment and Supplies on

Hi all!  I am new gatherings.  I am graduate student in Iowa and just bought myself my first sewing machine as a present to myself for christmas.  I bought a Singer 2662. I made a few simple curtains for my living room but halfway though the project my machine started malfunctioning. The material started to pucker and the stitch looked like the top tension was too tight.  I tried adjusting (both tighter and looser) and that didn’t seem to help.  I double checked my threading (made sure the bobbin was threaded correctly as well).  I also changed the needle and even took the bobbin plate off to make sure there wasn’t a bunch of lint in the machine.  The feed dog seems to be working alright.  I am just at my whits end.  I can’t seem to get it to function properly.  I don’t know if it is just a defective machine.  Maybe this wasn’t the best machine to buy.  I spent about $200 on it and that is about all I can afford.  I have only had it two weeks so I can still return it.  I would be very greatful for any advise on what might be going wrong or a recomendation for a better machine.  Thank you very much for you help.

Patti, you might want to consider taking a sample showing the bad stitching and the machine back to the dealer. There might be an adjustment that needs to be made to the machine. Or perhaps you have something set up incorrectly. The dealer should be able to help you attain a perfect stitch. Are there classes included with your machine purchase? If so, please take them....it really is the best way to learn the ins and outs of any new sewing machine.

      Thanks Sandy!

By looking at a lot of other posts here on the newsgroup, I realized that I should take the machine back that I bought because I got it at Walmart (i.e. no customer service included).  There is a really nice dealer downtown here that has a Janome 415 in my price range.  They offer classes and within a year of my purchase, if I decide that I bought too simple of a machine, I can trade up and get the full price of my machine toward a more advanced model.  Even if the machine was twice as much, I think it would be worth it for the customer service!

      Thanks again,

      Patti

You're on the right track, I think. Good luck!
