fabric suggestion?

sewcrazed | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

I am designing myself a dress based on Julia Robert’s Black and white Valentino Oscar gown (I think it was the 74th oscars).  What fabric would you suggest?

Here is another picture of the gown I am trying to emulate.

Oh, that is gorgeous isn't it? It appears to me that the main body of the dress is made of velvet, with a train made from a sheer fabric such as organza, trimmed with satin ribbon? I don't know about the organza - the train pictured appears to have some weight and not to be particularly "floaty" but maybe the weight comes from multiple layers or the ribbon trim.I think the velvet would be wonderful, but other sort-of-heavy fabrics like faille or tafetta come to mind, too. I hope you'll keep us posted with your progress.

I would also say it's velvet, but you could use a nice heavy silk crepe or 4 ply silk.

At first I thought the train was a soft drapy fabric, but I think the shiny white is just an extension of the ribbons from above. I agree with the velvet and organza suggestion. Do you get to wear this somewhere? What fun.
