how to use a purse frame.?

annewithane | Posted in General Discussion on

I have a u shaped purse frame with a central closure and I want to make an evening bag. This frame does not unhinge and has no holes around it for sewing bag to frame and it look like you make up the bag and lining etc and then somehow probably push it into the u channel but what holds it in. Is it glue? If so what glue? I have purchased s everal books all to no avail. Linda McGehees book comes close but her frame has no central closure so a band can slip over the frame. Please help anyone. I have googles myself silly and need to spend more time working and preparing for Christmas. Thank you in anticipation…I know there is a lot of smart people out there. Regards,Anne

    Dear  anne.

last year i had the same problem what to do about a closure for my bag.

I had embroidered a velvet puse about 6 in long and i Lined it,  I settled for a clip made from a lovley button shaped like a rose because i had embroidered Roses and beads on the black velvet in pink. I made a very long velvet strap about 12 in long and placed it in side the lining at the sides.  If i had done this from sctach i would of made the loop and the strap before i made the bag lining.

I made a loop undid the lining put the loop in side sewed back the lining and looped it over the pink rose button which was about the size of a 10 cent piece

I found it very easy i was able to have a drink of wine etc without having to put my bag down which only had my glasses and hankerchief and car key which can be taken off the ring you usually have it on so that the bag is not to heavy, this was enough to keep the bag from looking awkward and it sat niceley and i had a few people ask where i purchased it.

Hope this helps, and you are able to get on with the christmas things.

    all the best denise.

Thanks Denise for your interest and that closure for your bag sounds lovely. Unfortunately the purse frame that I have has a closure and my problem is how to get the bag into the frame and make it stay there permanently. It's a very vexing problem and it surely must have a solution. A lot of old bags have this type of frame, perhaps I should just pull one apart. Thanks again for taking the tropuble to help me. I hope you have a lovely Xmas.

the channel you speak of was probably meant to be crimped shut over the fabric by a special machine, especiaaly if it is a vintage frame.
        where did you get it?

That makes a lot of sense. It's not a vintage frame,I got it from one of the ebay sellers, Ah Kwok in Hong Kong. I love making bags etc and wanted to experiment with frames. I have several old bags and have looked at them but couldn't figure it out. I thought about crimping but thought if you used pliers etc you'd just leave a whole series of marks on the frame. A special machine makes a lot of sense. Thanks so much. I think now what I have to do is get a better frame and start again. Regards and Happy Xmas,Anne
