I want to use african style chain stitch machine embroidery on my garments. What kind of machine should I look for? Does anyone have any experience with this type of embellishment?

Is this the kind of machine that will also sew names on jackets etc.? Not the computerized names but the free-hand written names. The old FFA jackets were done this way.
I know an old neighbor who bought such a machine for his wife about 15 years ago or so. The machine is an industrial/commercial machine with a third or half horse motor, complete with table and all. His wife was going to make a business using it but they lost the main source of need. The machine was only used for a short time and
then it has just set there. Since then the man's wife has died. I saw the machine and it is in good shape but I have no idea how it is supposed to run. He wanted to sell it to me.
If you are interested I can see if the old man still has it and how much he wants for it. Shipping won't be cheap of course, but you can probably buy the machine cheap enough. He paid over $2,000. when it was new.
