Looking for fabric stores in BC Canada

cloetzu | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

Hello,

I’m going to be in White Rock and Vancouver BC (Canada) next week and was wondering if anyone could suggest any fabric stores that I should/have to visit?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi there,

I found a Yellow pages listing for you for a White Rock fabric store. I haven't been to it - has anyone else?

Laura's Fashion Fabrics, 1552 Johnston Road, White Rock, BC, 604-531-3293

White Rock is really small. I'd bet this is the only one there. I've never seen others.

But for Vancouver you have some fun options! There are two that come to mind in particular:

    1. There is a Canadian chain of stores called Fabricland - they're not thrilling but they're pretty extensive. There is one on Marine Drive that I recall being especially sizeable.

Here are the Fabricland addresses for Vancouver. If you're interested, you may want to look at http://www.fabriclandwest.com to see if they have any sale specials or coupons for the time you'll be there:

    Vancouver

1110 Park Royal South, West Vancouver, BC 604-925-1004
    Open: Mon. to Tues. 10:00am-7:00pm
              Wed. to Fri. 10:00am-9:00pm
              Sat. 9:30am-6:00pm   Sun. 11:00am-6:00pm
1678 SE Marine Dr. Vancouver, BC Ph: 604-321-1848
    Open: Mon. to Fri. 10:0am-9:00pm
              Sat. 10:00am-6:00pm   Sun.11:00am-5:00pm

    2. Also, if you're interested in bright and colorful dressy fabrics, then the intersection at 48th and Main Street will delight you. It's the shopping district in an Indian neighborhood and the sari shops and fabric stores are outstanding. Lovely sheer cottons with gold threads woven through, I sigh when I think of them.. You can make everything from party dresses to table linens with those fabrics. I still have a 48/Main stash I am dying to make up.

Here is a part of an article on the Indian fabric row, with addresses and recommendations. It's from a Vancouver free newspaper:

    "Best places for material girls

    Punjabi Market
Main Street between 48th and 51st avenues

    Rokko Sarees and Fabrics
    6201 Fraser Street
    604-327-8033

    Mason Sewing Machine Co.
    6150 Fraser Street
    604-327-3800

The sari and fabric shops in the Punjabi Market are a textile lover's dream. Running the gamut from slippery synthetics to the finest silks and wools, they boast something to please every taste, whether you choose to sew, drape, or swag your finds on your body or around your home. And the prices are remarkably reasonable. You'll also find the finest pashminas, richly beaded dresses, elegant men's wedding suits, and tasteful boxed shirt-and-tie sets with quasi-designer names for between $2.99 and $5.98. Check out Guru Bazaar (6529 Main Street, 604-327-4422) and the Frontier Cloth House (6695 Main Street, 604-325-4424). Over on Fraser Street, Rokko Sarees and Fabrics has the usual glorious saris and fabrics, as well as a good cache of linen, cotton, and canvas at prices that make it easy to be greedy. Sew it all up with lessons and a machine from the Mason Sewing Machine Co., a store that's been in the 'hood since 1948."

    Happy shopping and sewing!

    :) Mary

The most fabulous fabric store is Fabricana, one in Surrey and the other in ?? North Van, really can't remember, check the phone book when you get there.  I go every time I'm on the mainland, I could spend all day there.  Forget Fabricland mediocre at best.

Fabricana is no longer in Surrey.  There is one on United Blvd. in Coquitlam and one in Richmond.

Oh bother.  Thanks for letting me know, it would be a BIG disappointment to make the trip there to find it, gasp, GONE.

Try a few places in Richmond (where the international airport is) , which is between White Rock & Vancouver. **These are shops I have visited in the last 3 years on my trips to Vancouver.

**Fabricana Imports - 4591 Garden City Road , Richmond , BC
    - good quality, med to high prices

**Koret Outlet Store - 120-7731 Alderbridge Way , Richmond , BC
Fabrics from RTW manufacturer and outlet clothing

then go on to the Main / Fraser Streets where there are lots of Indian stores; examples:
Textile Clearance House - 5550 Fraser Street , Vancouver
    Rokko Sarees & Fabrics - 6201
    Fraser Street , Vancouver
--similar area but one block west of Fraser is Main Str--
    Jerry's Fabrics - 6542 Main Str
Frontier Cloth House Ltd - 6695 Main Street , Vancouver

    downtown Vancouver has

**Gala Fabrics Ltd - 3135 Granville Street , Vancouver
Elle Fabrics - 692 Seymour Street , Vancouver
    - both high end stores as I recall

**DressSew - 337 West Hastings Str, Vancouver
     - huge bargain basement atmostphere and prices (watch the parking times at the meters they tow away after (?)3.30pm )

also worth a visit and close to White Rock is
    A Great Notion Ltd - (604-575-9028)
    Showroom 108-19289 Langley By-Pass , Surrey , BC
    they have notions an
d stuff -I've never been to the store but purchased from them at shows

Go to maps.google.ca and get directions from White Rock to the first store then add the others as further destinations. You will get a great map to plan your day(s) and avoid doubling back.

    Have fun,

    Tessa

Subsequent to my msg on 25th Nov, I found out that Koret in Richmond no longer sells fabrics at the outlet store.

Fabricana's location on 4591 Garden City Rd, Richmond is a huge new building. Other location is 1348 United Boulevard, Coquitlam Check their website for hours.  http://www.fabricana.com

      Regards, Tessa

Too bad I saw this so late.  Fabricana on United Blvd. in Coquitlam is the best.  There is another Fabricana in Richmond--much the same I hear.  Laura's in white Rock has nice fabric, just way smaller store.
