My sister is now required to have the new style working utility shirts. My problem is that the shoulders are too long by 1″. I have released the seams and basted the sleeves into the new position, but now I have wrinkles on front and back of sleeves. The sleeves look terrible and the front and back area of the shirt have too much fabric. Pruchasing a shirt using the high bust measurement next time won’t work because the waist and hip would be too narrow. The uniforms obviously are designed for young, high busted women and unfortunately there isn’t a pattern, fabric, or notions available or I would just custom alter for a lower fuller bust and narrow shoulder fit. Mary Roher’s alteration book on ready made just suggests what I have already done, but didn’t tell me this could happen. Now what do I do? This is only the first of the new uniforms so whatever changes I make will have to be done to each shirt as it is purchased. Manditory wearing of the new uniforms is soon so any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

When the shirt shoulder is narrowed, it also increases the size of the armhole. The armhole will have to be made smaller by taking in the underarm seam. The armhole also has to be reshaped so that the curve of the armhole fits the body properly. Often I lay a blouse pattern over the garment to get the proper curve. Good luck! Joan
