New project help

mishyb | Posted in General Sewing Info on

Hi I’m Mishy.  I’m located in Oregon and new to this site.  I’ve been sewing at a barely-above-beginner level for about 20 years now (more off than on).  I want to create home made gifts this Christmas, and have having some trouble laying out my plan to make a fabric jewelry wrap.  I can do the patchwork stuff I have in mind, but need help with how to put pockets with closures (not zippers) in my project.  The idea is to have a fabric wrap that when laid open has 4-5 pockets for storing necklaces, earrings, etc.  They’ll need to be closable – I was thinking hook and eyes for the ability to customize and add detail – but I’m just not sure HOW to make it happen.  Any suggestions or help??

JunkQueen:  Wow, that one from the emblibrary is the first one I have ever seen that includes an area for hanging chains.  Having looked at many travel jewelry holders, whether to purchase or to sew, I can state that I have never seen any except for that one.   I'm certain there were some; must have missed them.  I always add them because I probably wear necklace chains more than any other type of necklace.

Threadkoe:  yes, definitely Velcro; zippers OK for longer pockets.  After all, we don't want to lose those diamond and emerald bracelets while in route.  And those darned little earrings are just waiting to make their escape.

I found that the velcro adds a barrier that keeps little things from slipping out.  The hook side seems to catch fine chains just enough to keep them from falling too far to the bottom of a pocket as well.  Great for stiff fingers.  Cathy

My favorite jewelry roll has velcro closures rather than hooks or snaps.  The pockets can be removed from the roll as well.  The velcro keeps things from slipping out when they are rolled and unrolled.  Just a thought.  Cathy
