New Sewing Machine Advice

Ktpdx | Posted in Equipment and Supplies on

I am looking to buy a new Sewing Machine and have gone to two different shops.  One sells Pfaff/Bernina and the other is a Brothers Dealer.  Both offer comparable services and warranties.  The machines I’m looking at (a Pfaff Classic 2025 and a Brother NX 400) are comparable in price ($100 difference).  Most avid sewers I know are biased towards the German/European machines.  My husband, who is into electronics, thinks the Japanese produce superiour electronic boards.  Any recommendations??

Also, I am trading in an old Pfaff 46 (late 60’s, early 70’s) – decent condition but  needs to be tuned up.  One store is offering me a $50 notion credit, the other store doesn’t want it.  I’ve looked on Ebay and found an almost identical machine that is currently being bid on that started at $150 and is up to $285.   How do I know if I’m getting ripped off and find out how much this machine is actually worth?

Any recommendations/thoughts/reviews/opinions are helpful – thanks in advance!

Hi, I think your best option would be to have your machine refurbished/repaired and then sell it on Ebay. This of course, depends on whether your machine needs parts and whether they can be obtained as well as the cost of repairs. If it is going to be more than the machine is really worth then maybe you should donate it somewhere.

A reconditioned Pfaff will go for a good price on Ebay.

For your new machine, look into some of those good used former Top-of-the-Line computerised machines, you will get all the perks of a new machine at a considerable less price. Buying at a dealer is a good idea because they may offer warranty on these.

    Good luck with your decision.

I actually wouldnt sell the oldmachine as they are great fast machines and you may find that the new one wont go as fast . I use mine to make curtains and big long jobs Also if he new one is an embroidery machine being able to sew and embroider at the same time is really very usful.
