Ready-made repairs

beeharris | Posted in General Sewing Info on

Some of my ready-made garments have hems that have curled, or folded up from the wrong side to the right side. Is there any fix for this?

I wondered about using iron-on Pellon or something similar on the inside of the hem.

I'm assuming that the hems are turned under 1/2"and betting that the stitching is too close to the edge of the folded hem.  Try stitching the hem 1/8" in from the existing stitching.  Stitching too close to the edge will cause the hem to turn out.

ready made repairs - what type and texture, etc...

Hi, what type of garment is it, and what is it used for?  I've always had luck with ironing and steaming, first trying to go lightly, using a pressing cloth, etc.  You don't have to go drastic but do it gradually, and remember not to burn it.  Different fabrics behave differently.  Its the least expensive and most economical method if you already have an iron available, that does not require you to do extra purchases that are based solely on trial and error.  I don't intend to be rude, but I have lived through a life time of  purchasing on recommendations without investigating on the behavior and use of the fabric in question.  In the end, it is my bill to pay.  Although a lot of ideas are wonderfully useful, go for the one that requires what you already have at hand.

    Narrow hems?

That turning up could be because the fabric was stretched during stitching.  It will show up more on the true bias and not at all on the straight grain.
