Stretch woven v. non-stretch woven

Elaray | Posted in General Discussion on

I subscribed to Burda WOF several months ago and I love the patterns in it. I use the plus size range and I want to make everything!! Most of the plus designs call for stretch woven fabric, which is not that easy to find in my area. I’m reluctant to use regular woven because most of my sewing disasters have been the result of making bad fabric choices and I’m afraid to take chances.

What adjustments, if any, can I make so that I can use regular wovens in place of stretch wovens? I typically increase the waist, bust, and thigh.

You will need more ease in a non-stretch pattern.  If the pattern lines are simple, just add more fabric to the side seam and pin fit.  Make sure you can sit down and move.

I have found that Burda WOF Plus patterns include a lot of ease, so you may be ok.  Measure the circumference of a well fitting garment (non-stretch, of course) and compare that to your pattern to help you make adjustments.

Better yet...there are a lot of wonderful online fabric sources.  I tend to find better quality fabrics online!

I recently got the Clothesline range from Christine Jonson and was amazed at the number of very good quality stretch wovens and knits which are available.Stretch wovens are THE best for pants and jackets . They make moving around really comfortable .
