I made this skirt 6 years ago out of a striped blue poly-cotton-lycra blue fabric and an orange cotton knit. Color inspiration from blue jeans.
The skirt looked deceptively simple, so a few notes on construction:
- The side edges are zig-zagged. All other edges are raw. Although you skip finishing, there is also no forgiveness when cutting out — straight, smooth, continuous.
- This is a wrap skirt with no seams — a few tucks, a lonely dart, and a couple pieces of fabric held together with snaps. You wind up marking the tucks and darts and snap placements in the absence of “markers” like side seams.
- Orienting the snap tape is a bit of a tricky, pay-attention application. Tape is applied on the fabrics’ right side, tape is applied on the wrong side, tape is applied through both fabrics. And the right and left snap tapes follow different angles and are different lengths.
Depending on the size I happen to be sporting, I might skip a snap or two when attaching the left side snap tape to adjust fit. This pattern makes me appreciate the artistry of draping, the skirt is a great substitute for jeans, and it always feel very chic.
Did you piece the fabric? If not, where did you find such wide fabric?
