My Granddaughter's Christening Dress
Although I hadn't sewn children's clothing for many years, I offered to make my granddaughter's christening dress. The most exciting part of this endeavor was that when my daughter was getting married, I ordered fabric from the bridal salon in order to make the flower girl's dresses out of the same material as the bridal gown. In addition, I ordered a bit of the same pale pink silk taffeta of the bridesmaid dresses to make the sashes. Since I saved the leftovers, I thought it would be most fitting to make the baby's dress out of the same material of her Mommy's wedding dress. I added a sheer overlay on the skirt, with tucks, and used the taffeta to trim the bonnet and make the shoes. The soles of the shoes are also of the bridal satin. I repeated the use of the sheer overlay on the "head" of the bonnet. The baby's name is embroidered on the hem of the dress, and her birthdate on the sole of the shoe. My daughter plans on creating a family heirloom from this dress by passing it down, hopefully to her daughter's daughter and so on, and adding each name of the wearer to the hem of the dress. What a treasure for generations to come. I could not be happier with this project. I used a pattern, but added my own creations to the design.
