Meet the Flintstones!
Fred and Wilma Flintstone costumes are based on the cartoon characters. I designed and sewed both outfits using materials already in house, except for the cat 'fur' (printed bottom weight ponte knit) used for Fred's tunic. The attached necktie was made from interfaced wool jersey topstitched to the front.
Wilma's dress is in three parts - fitted one-shoulder blouse with attached 'rock' necklace, pleated overskirt, and petticoat. The blouse was based on New Look 6655 and made from linen/rayon blend using double fold bias tape to bind the neckline and armsceye edges. The "rock" necklace is made from wool stuffed fabric balls sewed to a length of hem tape and attached to the shoulder of the dress (to keep it in place). The overskirt is a repurposed cotton bedsheet with grosgrain ribbon waistband. The elastic waisted petticoat has an upperskirt of cotton/silk batiste, with a gathered lower skirt of poly/cotton eyelet chosen to lend a degree of stiffness to hold the skirt out gently. The costume was surprisingly comfortable and modest. (Who knew that Wilma was more 50's housewife than 60's chick?)
I made both costumes and a stole (not pictured) in 9 hours over two days. Sometimes a project comes together almost in spite of the designer. This was the most fun I've had in the studio in ages! And it was pretty fun at the party too :)
