Sew a Cozy Reversible Cover-Up

Threads #4, April/May 1986

Want to make a cozy cover-up but don’t want to spend weeks, days, or even hours sewing it up? You can sew a cute, reversible, faux shearling jacket in a flash with this tutorial from Quick Stuff to Sew, Vol. 2. You not only get two looks in one and great raw-edge seams but you also cut the time it takes to make it in half because you don’t have to line or face it.

The jacket shown here was made from Simplicity SewStylish 2730, but you can use any simple jacket pattern; just look for a pattern with few design details. This project is so fast you’re likely to spend more time choosing what outfit to pair it with than actually sewing it.

Supplies and sourcesfabric

• Fabric, reversible, amount determined by the pattern and its size
• Jacket pattern, Simplicity SewStylish 2730, view C
• Sewing machine
• Thread, matching

TIP: Keep fraying in check

A knit or suede fabric that won’t fray is best for this jacket. But, if you do choose a fabric that frays easily, stitch 1 ⁄ 16 inch outside your seamline to stop the fraying before it hits the seam and enjoy the fringe the fray makes.

Prepare your pattern, and sew

This cute, cropped jacket is fast and easy because it has few seams, no facings, and few design details. You’ll get a chic, deconstructed look by highlighting raw seam edges on one side of the jacket and around its edges.

1. Choose which side is which. Since the fabric is reversible, both sides are right sides. Determine which side you’d like the seams to show on. Then, cut off the seam allowances from the center front, neckline, and hems of your pattern pieces.
