Free Spirit
comments (0) October 20th, 2009 in sewing, design, garment construction, embellishments, reader's closetMy granddaughter, Shoshana, decided she wanted to be a fairy for Halloween. However, having moved to Oregon where the weather is likely to be inclement, I felt she needed something to keep her warm. The result came from my telling her about dryads (tree fairies) and we set out to create a "Free Spirit" from fall colors. That year (2006) was probably the best costume I've made and I had a lot of fun doing it, eventhough it meant stepping outside my comfort zone and working with materials I'd never used before. Also, because of the cold weather, it meant learning how to alter the basic clothing patterns so I could line both the cape and the jumper as well as alter other features (such as the folded back sleeves). By the time I'd made all the changes, it bore little resemblence to the patterns I'd used as my starting off point. The best part, was once the wings and other accessories were removed, she had a lovely jumper and cape to wear for other occasions.
