Pattern Review: Sycamore Road Patterns, Waterfall Blouse/Dress

Threads #226, Summer 2024

Flowing Maxi

SycamoreRoadPatterns.com

Skill Level

Suitable for intermediate sewists. For the maxi version, the large pattern pieces may be cumbersome.

Size Range and Fitting

Sizes A to P for busts 31-1/2 inches to 591/2 inches and waists 24 inches to 53 inches. No hip measurements are given. The bodice has some ease, and the voluminous sleeves provide additional bust ease.

Fabrics

Choose soft, lightweight fabric with drape and flow, such as tissue linen, gauze, lightweight silk, rayon challis, and voile.

Style and Sewing Details

This dress has a stand collar, a bib-like bodice and soft, billowing sleeves. The sleeve volume is controlled with pleats at the top of the sleeve and with gathering at the wrist. The bodice meets the A-line skirt at 2 inches above the waistline. The waist volume is controlled by a strip of elastic sewn to the seam allowance. The length options are a blouse-length, minidress, or maxi length.

• The sewing instructions are accurate and easy to follow, with photographs.

• The table of contents makes it simple to locate the information you need.

• A page on size selection and adjustments clearly outlines how to choose your size and make alterations.

• Pay attention to step 8, sewing the sleeve underarm seam. Sew only as far as the notch, which stops about 5 inches away. This results in a portion of the sleeve underarm seam being sewn to the skirt.

• Our tester can picture this as a bridal dress in the 1960s, for a casual woodland wedding. Wear the blouse or minidress for a casual occasion on a warm day or as a beach dress. The Waterfall maxi dress has a full skirt, so keep fabrics light.
